Shatavari

Shatavari, referred to as “the woman who has 100 husbands”
Common Name: Wild Asparagus
Latin Name: Asparagus racemosus- Radix

**Shatavari is the foremost uterine tonic!!!!!

By the name’s reference, you could guess that this herb is excellent for the female reproductive system. It is also an amazing anti-inflammatory, gives STRENGTH, is an aphrodisiac, rejuvenative, promotes menses, encourages fertility, increases OJAS (immunity, glow and vigor), nourishes breast milk, calms and nourishes the nervous system (helps alleviate anxiety), useful to alleviate menopausal symptoms of hot flashes, irritability, irregular memory and dryness and benefits the eyesight!

WOW, right????

Shatavari is best taken when infused with ghee as the ghee acts as a carrier for the medicine and will bring it deep through the tissues to the reproductive system, the last of the dhatus/layers of tissues to be reached in the body. Samadhi Ayurveda takes special orders for Shatavari Rose ghee.

Women’s Bliss Milk:

  • 1 cup organic raw or non homogenized cow’s milk or fresh made almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp shatavari root powdered
  • 1/4 tsp licorice powder
  • 1/2 tsp rose petal powder
  • 1/4 cinnamon
  • 1/2 ghee
  • 1/2 tsp sucanat

Bring the milk to a boil, remove from heat, add herbs and spices- steep for 5-8 minutes. Drink 1 hour before bed. Drink this everyday for one week every month.

Looking for a sweet herbal tea to soothe your stress, calm your mind, awaken your heart, and soothe anger and sadness?

Try this OPEN HEART tea courtesy of my teacher Vaidya Rk Mishra.

  • 3-5 Organic rose buds
  • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/4 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 pinch DGL powder (found at natural food stores or chandika.com)
  • Pour boiling water over herbs, steep 5-10 minutes, strain. Sip daily.

DGL is deglycyrrhizinated licorice.

“Licorice has been used in many forms throughout the centuries by many cultures. Traditionally, the licorice root is used for hormonal issues, gut and throat issues, respiratory issues, and fatigue issues. We know now that the glycyrrhizin in licorice root can cause issues with hypertension, edema, and possibly effect a hormonal component of our renal regulation called aldosterone regulation. So, there is definitely a concern for long-term use in regards to licorice root, but the deglycyrrhizinated licorice version has the substantial parts of glycyrrhizin removed, therefore is a safer option for long-term use if needed.” Julie Chen , MD

What does this mean???

The elements of earth and water are predominant in the atmosphere which brings the energy of GROWTH, STABILITY, SOFTNESS, and DEPTH.

Balance is found in this season by encouraging:

• Engage in stimulating physical exercise everyday
• Open yourself to new and invigorating experiences
• Rise with the sun everyday; avoid oversleeping
• Eat wholesome, light, warm, pungent (spicy) foods
• Avoid cold, oily, rich, and excessively sour, salty and sweet foods
• Buffer yourself against cold, damp, and wet environments
• Unburden yourself of all old loads and lighten your heart
• Clean your closets every spring and fall and give away what you haven’t used in the last year
• Salt scrubs, vigorous massage, dry brushing, lymphatic massage

Detox Kitchari Recipe

Daily Balance with Sacred Ayurveda

SPRING CLEANING inside and out!

I don’t know about you, but all I want to do right now is clear my space: inside and out! My home is slowly being purged of items I don’t need, the windows are getting washed inside and out, and my body also is feeling a need to REFRESH!

In the wintertime our pranic channels shrink causing toxins to accumulate in the body. As the weather warms we naturally feel the need to eat lighter foods and clear this out!
Springtime foods that bring balance are bitter, astringent and pungent!

Try this recipe for DETOX KITCHARI in the spring to give your digestive fire a rest as you clear toxins from the system, gently and easily.

  • ¼ c organic barley, soaked overnight in fresh spring water
  • ¼ c organic quinoa, rinsed
  • ¼ c split mung beans, rinsed
  • 2 cups or more spring water
  • 1 T ghee
  • 1 tsp spice mix (combine: turmeric, cumin, coriander, fennel)
  • Sea salt to taste

Night before: place barley in a jar, cover with spring water and soak.

Before cooking, rinse the soaked barley and place in pot with boiling water, ghee and spices. Cook for 20 minutes and then add quinoa and rinsed mung beans, cook for another 25 min. When you have about 5-10 minutes left of cooking, add optional vegetables, salt and a generous squeeze of fresh lime!
